Whether you’ve purchased a faulty item, have been a victim of a scam or want to find out how to complain, we can help. We’ve compiled a list of useful links which will help you to find the information you need to make a decision about what to do.

Useful Links

Consumer Protection (Department of Mines, Industry Regulation & Safety) have a useful guide to your rights as a consumer on their website. As a consumer, you have rights under the Australian Consumer Law which apply whether you’ve bought something new, used or online (from an Australian seller).

If you think you’ve been a victim of a scam, you can report it to Scamwatch.

If you need legal advice about banking, financial or consumer issues, you can contact the Consumer Credit Legal Service WA on (08) 9221 7066. If you’re in financial difficulty, the Financial Counsellors Association of Western Australia can provide help and advice.

The Australian Securities and Investments Commission Infoline (1300 300 630) can give information on the obligations of credit providers. It deals with complaints about misleading and deceptive conduct in the provision of goods and services.

The ASIC MoneySmart website has information on how to complain about financial services and products – the site also contains sample complaint letters.

The Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR) can be searched before you purchase a car, motorbike, caravan, trailer or boat. For more information on PPSR when buying a car see the My Car website from Legal Aid WA. This website resource provides essential information for car buyers, whether buying privately, through a car dealership or at auction. Use this website to learn about your legal rights when buying a car and where to get help if something goes wrong. You are also covered by Australian Consumer Law when you purchase a vehicle.

If you have a problem in relation to your mobile phone, visit the ASIC MoneySmart website for more information. The Telecommunications Consumer Protections Code is also a good source of information. For problems with a phone bill, contract, coverage, network faults, or overcharging, contact the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman on 1800 062 058.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has a number of useful guides about consumer issues.
